Wind Turbine
This exhibit was designed for use as part of an outreach programme run by the By Design Group on behalf of npower. Being part of a touring show it is light and portable and is transported in an individual flight case.

It incorporates a really exciting interactive element. As it stands the exhibit is presented to the user with a wind source (small fan) and a wind turbine with no vanes. The user has to make the vanes and attach them to the wind turbine in order to make the exhibit function.

This is an interesting experiment as a number of factors can be explored, these are:
• The number of vanes
• The size of each vane – and therefore the overall turning surface
• Weight of the vanes – various materials can be explored
• Shape of the vanes
• Orientation of the vanes

One or all of these can affect the outcome dramatically and the speed of the wind turbine is represented by a strip of LEDs which illuminate depending on the power produced by the wind turbine.
