Seeing Life Through New Light is the follow-up exhibition to the highly
acclaimed touring exhibition called Tripping The Light Fantastic.
FifeX has produced a number of exhibits for this programme as it has
expanded over two years.
Cells behave in peculiar ways when under the influence of certain colours
of light. This interactive explores those properties and goes someway
towards explaining the chemical composition of Cells.
The giant ‘clover’ light sources simulate the shining of coloured light
using LUXEON ultra bright LEDs – then the cell responds in the appropriate
way. As with the other cell, this exhibit can either be totally self-sufficient
or can be hooked up to an external display source where the videos and
on-screen images are used to supplement the process – particularly useful
for lectures or large spaces.
A late addition to this cell was the inclusion of IR LEDs which function
when the red light is shone onto the cell – users can’t see anything
happening until the webcam is turned on – this add-on has proved particularly
popular.
The cells made their first major appearance at Cheltenham 2009
