Seat of Nails

Force, Pressure and a lot of nails!

Timeline: 1 month

Client: Science Made Simple (and others)

Value: £500

Aim: To produce a seat / stool based on the 'bed of nails' idea. The stool would be easier to transport and form part of a touring workshop. It had to be the right size for anyone to use - from a small person or a large adult.

What we did: The Seat of Nails, our first ever educational resource, allows you to do just that; get pupils to sit on the nails and experience the strange sensation of sitting on something sharp without it hurting. The one shown in the picture uses a converted lab stool with some quite heavy-duty handles to support your weight as you lower yourself onto the nails. With over 600 nails the average person has the equivalent of less than 80g resting on a single nail - hence why it doesn't hurt.Either purchase the complete product from us or send us an old laboratory stool and we'll convert it into a seat of nails for you!

Testimonial: "Science made simple commissioned FiFex to design and construct a seat of nails for us for use in our touring Sports show. They listened intently to our brief and were able to personalise the prop to our own branding. The resulting stool has had many hundreds of willing (and some unwilling!) volunteers sit on it to demonstrate the difference between Force and Pressure. After over 5 years of intensive use the prop is still going strong thanks to the sturdy construction and solid design"
